Sherlock Holmes is a Fighter

The new Sherlock Holmes trailer previewed a few days ago- it looks great. Purists might be worried about the heavily featured violence, but producer and co-writer Lionel Wigram has breezily (and accurately) justified it, saying,
Right off the bat, in the first Holmes novel, the Mormon epic romance drama A Study in Scarlet, Watson notes that Holmes is "an expert singlestick player, boxer, and swordsman."
The film will be using other canonical strands as jumping-off points, including an amped up bohemian flair Holmes-- assumedly this will be paired with the drug use that irritates Watson at the beginning of The Sign of Four. Most interestingly, the plot revolves around the spiritualism/occultism that was so popular among the upper class of the time and which Conan Doyle would later in his life engage in following the death of his son after the First World War.
Admittedly, it could go one of a few ways: will it be a very pretty but just as ludicrous and goofy Shanghai Knights? An awkwardly contrived anachronistic period drama a la A Knights Tale? I'm pretty optimistic. The trailer promises a fun and exciting film, glossy with Madonna-ex and director Guy Ritchie's trademark high stylization. And with Downey Jr, baldy Jude Law as Watson, and featuring the infamous Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), this is shaping up to be a movie I might actually go see on its Christmas release date.
