Poseidon (2006)

Poseidon (2006) is a dumb survival movie about a luxury cruise ship that is struck by a rogue wave that turns the ship upside-down, causing a whole bunch of people to die from falling objects, water and explosions. Thankfully, the rogue wave hits not too soon after Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas starts singing onstage.
You’ve seen this movie a hundred times. Disaster strikes and a group of survivors must stay alive by braving life threatening scenarios such as falling elevators and flooding rooms. The survivors include professional gambler, Dylan (Josh Lucas), ex New York mayor/ firefighter/ protective father/ superman, Robert (Kurt Russell) and token annoying kid, Conor (Jimmy Bennett).
The story and characters are mediocre and not exactly gripping. The enjoyment of watching this film comes from the primal glee of watching parts of the ship blow up and kill vast amounts of extras. While lacking in story, Poseidon does work as a suspenseful film. Characters are faced with one potentially deadly situation after another including long periods of swimming underwater. I don’t think I could hold my breath for one quarter of the amount of time that these people do. If I were a character in this film I’d have the unexciting death of drowning while swimming into another room.
Poseidon is visually interesting and suspenseful, but mostly it’s dumb.
