WARNING!! Movie spoiler review!! Do not read unless you have seen the movie!!
Wow, I can't believe the reviews that this movie has got! People actually compared it to the Karate Kid. I have faint memories of watching bits and pieces of the karate kid, and I don't remember mixed martial arts fighting... Could that mean that the reviewers think that all martial arts are the same? Then I guess they think all movies are the same then! I personally loved this movie and would give it a 4 ½ star rating. I am 23 years old which that could have a lot to do with my review.
If you open mindedly watch the movie, and put aside the "real world" thinking, you will find your self in that high school mentality. This movie did a great job creating that image and filling the story line with the emotions that would have been experienced by a high school boy in that situation. The main character loses his father because he did not stop him from drinking and driving. The emotions from that left him torn and confused. He faces his challenges and comes out on top because he doesn't give up; he has too much heart to lose. When he moves to his new home he doesn't know the first thing about mixed martial arts. He gets a major reality check when he gets his ass handed to him in a fight with the best in the school. So then he learns some wicked skills and becomes the best fighter that he could have become for all the wrong reasons, and learns to do it for all the right reasons along the way. The end of the movie is the way it had to be. I'm sorry, but people were mad because they knew how it was going to end and that took the suspense out of it. I mean, come on, you want to watch him lose? Of course he was going to win, the movie is called "Never Back Down", and so he's not backing down! This movie was entertaining and interesting. If you haven't seen it, go out and watch it!
