The hailed classic horror film "The Blob" finally found its way into my DVD player. Half a century after it was released many people still love the movie; it even has a miniature cult following. As horror movies go (contemporary or classic), this one seems to be quite good. And, considering its age, it is excellent.
What's interesting about the "Blob" is that it introduced a new kind of space alien to the world. Most science-fiction films give you an enemy with eyes to stare down the hunky hero or arms to grab the damsel in distress. Here, you have a creature with no face or body that can follow you through a heating vent or a crack in the wall. I like this concept, but a horror movie is still a horror movie.
"Blob" has all the classic horror movie elements: the disbelieving adults, the "Oh, a weird thing! Let's investigate!" attitude, even a dog (every horror survivalist knows that, while the puppy is adorable, you should never follow it, but listen do to its warnings). In a nut shell (which is all you need for most horror films), "Blob" is your typical horror movie. If you enjoy horror flicks, what are you waiting for? If you don't, it's more fun to laugh at than the modern films because it's so early and so has all those traditional mistakes. It's cute, not scary.
On a personal note, I adore films that finish with a "The End ?". It is incredibly cheesy, which is the very reason I wish more horror movies ended that way. It was a wise choice for "Blob" and with the continued threats of global warming, I foresee the sequel of "The Blob– Thawed!" or the like.
