"Kick-ass" is not what you expect

Perhaps the trailers filled with hopeful teenagers and cute comedy about the unexpected put down your guard. This seems like a nice comedy with a little bit of action to help keep you on your toes.
But wait! There's more. A dark and twisted feeling creeps in at the very beginning making you wonder if the director isn't playing some cruel joke on you with fantasy sequences. Nope, all of that gore and horror did just happen. Darn. That sure puts a damper on the "comedy" portion.
The fight sequences have a surreal Watchmen-esque style. Slow motion with plenty of violence. While impressive, the focus is drawn away by the massive amounts of blood on camera.
The background stories of each character travel deep, motivating their every move. The little girl (charmingly called Hit Girl) is the best as she tip toes on the border of knowing-too-much-for-her-own- good and subtle innocence.
All in all, it is actually decent. If you liked what you saw in the trailers, go for it. But just don't expect to laugh your way down the theatre aisles.
