Anticipation: Top 3 Summer Flicks
May 27th 2009 14:16
Putting behind my first "summer" flick-- far, far behind-- the season looks to be shaping up well.
The Top Three That I'm Jazzed About:
A lot of fun movies seem to be coming out, some foreign ones that piqued my interest (O'Horten?), and a whole bunch I will definitely not be seeing (things with Michael Cera that aren't Arrested Development. Because I already made that mistake), though my main three are big release types.
1. Inglourious Basterds
Tarantino has said that this film will take advantage of "World War II iconography," an idea that is fascinating on its own when considering the romantic and historigraphical treatment of the war. I'm highly interested in the history of the war and the time period, and a movie that seeks to embed the romantic image of the war once again into pop culture is going to be alright by me. Also a huge fan of the Dirty Dozen, which Basterds seems to be echoing with the large ensemble cast playing the crackerjack, ultra-violent fuckup team. Bottom line: hard to go wrong with Tarantino's formula: Sphaghetti western WWII.
Slated for August 21.
2. Public Enemies
With the Pirates franchise's conclusion fading into the past, I'm starting to get over my Johnny Depp fatigue, but they could probably release 3 more movies with even more obnoxious multiple hallucinatory Jack Sparrows and Johnny Depp fatigue still couldn't trump my love for movies about Prohibition Era gangsters, those quintessential American folk heroes (and clothing! and cars! and gats and molls and stuff-- the same basic iconography idea that Tarantino is covering.) Johnny Depp is John Dillinger, facing off against Christian Bale's Hoover-era FBI agent. My favorite bit of trivia is the movie Dillinger saw the day of his death, Manhattan Melodrama, starring two of my favorites-- Powell & Loy-- as well as that man of charisma, Clark Gable.
Also starring Giovanni Ribisi and Marion Cottilard. Release date July 1.
3. Up
It looks like Pixar has made another insanely adorable, wisely touching, and visually stunning film. This time with cute old people, cute ineffectual Boy Scouts, and a cute sorta-talking dog (the execution of which could go either way.)
What are you top 3? (or 4, or 5)
